Woodburn Celebrates Front Street Ribbon Cutting

The City of Woodburn commemorated its Front Street improvement project Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event, held outside the Woodburn Area Chamber of Commerce, brought to an end a more than five-year process.

"It was a very positive experience for me because this is something that has been a number of years coming," said Mayor Kathy Figley. "... Having it done, having it look as beautiful as it does and seeing how much people do appreciate it was a real positive. You know, you feel kind of energized and ready to go on to the next stages of urban renewal.

"I also really appreciated the opportunity to recognize (Public Works Director) Dan Brown and (Assistant City Engineer) Eric Liljequist and the people in their department for all the work they did."

Figley called the completion of the Front Street project, along with the downtown plaza, the "end of the beginning" of the city's urban renewal program, which will continue with other projects and upgrades.

Brown said cutting the ribbon on Wednesday reminded him of the investment the community has made and its commitment to capital improvements.

"It's a privilege to be able to execute that investment on behalf of the community and the whole staff feels that tremendous responsibility to really get the greatest value for the dollar for the city," Brown said.

"It also shows how streets can be a pleasant and nice part of the community, not something to be afraid of or feel is a negative attribute to the community. The aesthetic contribution of the street system we felt is a really important message that we want the public to know," he added.
