SEDCOR Receives 2009 Outstanding Collaborative Partnership
Award of Excellence from the Oregon Economic Development Association

Efforts by organizations and individuals to increase economic vitality in their communities were recognized at the Oregon Economic Development Association’s 2009 Mission: Business Oregon in McMinnville.

The Outstanding Collaborative Partnership Award was presented to SEDCOR (the Strategic Economic Development Corporation) for the Industrial Maintenance Operator/Mechanic Training Program (IMOM) created in partnership with Chemeketa Community College. SEDCOR and Chemeketa Community College collaborated to develop IMOM to provide the Salem region with an industry-driven workforce training program designed to advance the talent capabilities of existing employees and effectively transfer the knowledge and expertise of a seasoned workforce to the next generation of workers. The goal of the IMOM program is to become a model to not only prepare the next generation of replacement workforce, but also to stabilize the regional workforce needs resulting in accelerating the Salem region’s strategic global competitiveness.

Over 30 companies within the region have been interviewed to identify top employee competencies. The IMOM program will raise the universal skill set of the workforce, as companies train for the optimum competencies in their own environment, an overall, better-trained workforce is created. In fact, the second largest school district in Oregon is now asking to participate in the partnership to help ready students for the workforce, and SEDCOR’s Construction Alliance, has adopted the IMOM as their training program to bring the fundamental and universal skills of construction employees to a higher level.

Nick Harville, SEDCOR’s Retention/Expansion Manager and Bob Topping, Ed.D. from Chemeketa Community College Center for Business & Industry - Strategic Partnerships Division have been very involved with developing this program and bringing it to local companies.

City of Salem's Renewable Energy & Technology Center and SANYO Recruitment Wins OEDA's Business Development Success Story Award

The Award of Excellence for Business Development Success Story was awarded to Salem’s Renewable Energy & Technology Center Project. The extensive project has been accomplished with the contributions of several partners including the City of Salem, Business Oregon, Portland General Electric (PGE), and Strategic Economic Development Corporation (SEDCOR).

“We are honored to be part of this successful partnership. The recruitment of SANYO Solar of Oregon LLC and the development of the Salem Renewable Energy & Technology Center is the result of a vision to bring industry and jobs to Salem,” said Salem’s Mayor, Janet Taylor.

The Business Development Success Story award recognizes efforts to recruit new companies and those that assist with the expansion and/or retention of existing companies that result in new capital investment and/or jobs (including creativity in structuring ‘win-win’ transactions/deals for both the community and the company).

The City of Salem and their partners received the award for the creation of the Salem Renewable Energy & Technology Center and the recruitment of SANYO Solar of Oregon LLC. In recognition of the importance of renewable energy, the City of Salem partnered with private and public organizations at the local, state, and federal level, to develop and market an industrial center that will position Salem as a hub for renewable energy manufacturing. The partnership’s strength is evidenced by the commitment of SANYO Solar of Oregon LLC, and continues with recruitment of additional sustainable industry to Salem.
