MARION COUNTY FAIR 2008 GOES GREEN

"This year's Marion County Fair is dedicated to being more environmentally friendly than ever," says Kelly Walther, chair of the County Fair Board. "Not only have we created a Living Green designation, but we are getting young people involved through the Youth Impact K-12 Recycled Art Project. The recycled art creations will be on display throughout the fair and an award ceremony will be held on Extreme Teen Day, Friday, July 11. "

The Marion County Fair eco-friendly changes this year include:

  • Partnering with bio-friendly businesses to recycle waste products. For example: Hillbilly Howe Farm will pick up the used cooking oil and recycle the oil into bio-diesel fuel.
  • Printing promotional materials on recyclable materials.
  • Reducing paper waste by offering on line registration forms and information.
  • Partnering with Businesses to create the "Living Green" display to promote sustainability.
  • Reducing solid waste by requiring trash crews to separate waste materials and have them placed in appropriate drop boxes.
  • Creating recycle drop areas throughout the fair including mixed paper.
  • Encouraging vendors to separate waste materials and placing them in the appropriate drop boxes.

"With these measures in place, the Marion County Fair can be proud of its efforts to go green this year and county residents can be assured that we will take every opportunity to add more each year," says Walther.

The Marion County Fair runs July 10-13 at the Oregon State Fair Grounds. For more information visit www.mcfair.net.
