For Immediate Release May 18, 2009 2008-09 Oregon Symphony Association in Salem Announces
The Oregon Symphony Association in Salem (OSAS) is proud to announce Dr. Ike Nail as this year’s Music Educator of the Year. Dr. Nail, who received his Doctor of Musical Arts-Conducting from the University of Texas, is being recognized for his work as Director of Bands at West Salem High School. He is also Director of Band and Orchestra at Western Oregon University. He will be recognized in Salem at the May 19 season ending classical concert with the Oregon Symphony, featuring Joshua Bell. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m. and will be held at Smith Auditorium on the Willamette University campus. The adjudication committee consisted of OSAS board members Leah Frajola, former Oregon Symphony musician; Bev Shein, OSAS Board Member; and Donna Loveland, OSAS Board Member. Upon visiting Dr. Nail’s classroom, the group was instantly impressed by the instructor and his approach to teaching his wind ensemble students. As students quietly came into class it was apparent they were eager to be there. Dr. Nail’s enthusiasm and sense of humor were embraced by his students. He worked with students not only on getting the notes, but the musical expression and feeling that is such an important component of the performance. The committee noted how the students deeply enjoyed the music they were playing and their wonderful grasp of musicianship and intonation. Committee member Bev Shein summed it up by saying "Dr. Ike Nail instills enthusiasm and excitement for music in his students that they will carry with them throughout their lives." Dr. Nail will be presented with a commemorative award and a check for $1,000 to augment his school’s music programs at the beginning of the second half of the May 19th concert. Other teachers considered for this year's award were: Carol Stenson, Director of Choirs at South Salem High School; Sara Linsell, Director of Bands at Leslie Middle School; Steve Phillips, General Music and Director of Choirs and Auburn Elementary School and Andy Thomas, Director of Choirs at Whiteaker Middle School. Tickets range in price from $25 to $43. Discounted tickets for groups of ten or more are available through the OSAS office at 503-364-0149. In addition, a $5 student ticket fee is offered at the box office, the night of the concert. They are available for any student, any age, with ID. The box office at Smith Auditorium opens at 6:30 p.m. Directions to Smith can be obtained at http://www.willamette.edu/wu_directions_print.pdf and attendees may park in any of the permit parking lots after 5:00 p.m. # # # IKE NAIL Dr. Ike Nail received his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Arts degrees from West Texas State University and his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Conducting from the University of Texas. He is a career French Horn player with a strong interest in symphonic music. Prior to coming to the Salem-Keizer School District fifteen years ago, Nail taught at the high school and collegiate level in Texas and California. Dr. Nail began his career in Salem-Keizer at Sprague High School where he was the co-recipient of two Grammy Awards. He moved to West Salem High School in their inaugural year. In addition to his work at West Salem, Dr. Nail is the Director of Band and Orchestra at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. Dr. Nail is a sought after guest conductor and clinician for several state and regional honor bands. His goal is to “make music of the highest quality, to teach the art and craft of music, to be involved in the development of modern music and to help raise the general level of appreciation for the arts in America.” Dr. Nail lives in Salem with his wife Lee Ann.
