11,000 Trees Planted Through OSU Federal e-Statement Promotion

Corvallis, OR – In the future, it could be known as the OSU Federal Forest.

Following through on a pledge made in its three-month drive for members to waive their paper monthly statements, OSU Federal, Your Community Credit Union, has fulfilled a donation to the state of Oregon Forestry Department for the planting of 11,000 trees to recognize the 3,424 members who made the move to e-statements through their online banking access.

The Department of Forestry is planting the “OSU Federal forest" this week at a 38-acre site near Hoskins, a location approximately 15 miles west of Philomath in Benton County.

With the successful promotion of e-statements from October 8 through the end of 2009, the participating 3,424 members bring the overall total of OSU Federal membership with e-statements to more than 10,000. That overall conversion to e-statements has saved more than 34,000 pages of paper, 16,000 envelopes and thousands of dollars in cost reduction in addition to faster delivery, security and 18 months of statement history online accessible to the member.

OSU Federal CEO Richard S. Hein said, “Our members’ reception of e-statements has been amazing. The positive environmental impact coupled with the savings of thousands of dollars in printing and mailing all comes around to benefit our membership and our communities in general. Planting-a-tree for every participating member just fit with the effort and will serve as a growing, sustainable monument of their commitment.”

A ceremony initiating the planting was held this week on the site involving OSU Federal branch management from the credit union's five counties. They included Ranelle Crosby (Philomath branch in Benton County), Peter Walker (Lebanon in Linn County), Jenipher Miller (Woodburn in Marion County), Nathan Wuerch (West Salem in Polk County) and Patti Ferry (Newport in Lincoln County).

OSU Federal is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative open to anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in Benton, Lincoln, Linn, Marion or Polk County. The 62,000-member credit union was honored as the National Community Credit Union of the Year by the Credit Union National Association in October of 2008.
