News Release from: City of Salem RIVER ROAD PARK REOPENS SATURDAY---PUBLIC INVITED TO GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION Posted: June 23rd, 2009 2:03 PM The public is invited to attend the River Road Park Grand Opening on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. River Road Park is located at 3045 River Road NE, across from the North Salem Fred Meyer Store. The complete renovation of this park came about through the construction of a wet weather treatment facility on the park property. In 1998, the City of Salem entered into an agreement with the Department of Environmental Quality to meet a federal deadline of 2010 to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows, which occur during the rainy months in most conditions. Planning efforts identified the least cost approach to be a satellite treatment facility located at River Road Park to be used solely for wet weather flows. Public Works recognized that construction efforts would close the park and significantly damage or remove all existing park grounds or structures. Based on this fact, money was set aside to renovate the park after construction of the treatment facility was complete. The park has two soccer fields, which will be available for program use next year. It also has a reservable shelter, two lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, a splash fountain water park, 110 car parking lot, restroom, a large playground with age-specific play structures, more than a mile of paved trails, an overlook of the Willamette River, and lots and lots of beautiful trees and open space for spontaneous recreation.
