Top Honor Goes to CEO for Second Time
The Oregon Rehabilitation Association (ORA) presented their highest honor, the “AL Award” to Jan Kral, CEO of Shangri-La Corporation, on September 24, 2009.
The award is presented annually to “the individual who has demonstrated significant contributions to the development, expansion or improvement of rehabilitation facilities and programs, for the ultimate benefit of people with disabilities.”
This marks the first time the AL Award has ever been given to the same person twice, as Jan also received the recognition nearly 20 years ago.
Her recent nomination cited her personal dedication and commitment to people with disabilities, her creative problem solving and strong relationship building skills, as well as her deep understanding of the legislative process.
Jan was instrumental in leading efforts by ORA and a consortium of community service providers in efforts that culminated in the developmental disability system receiving over $50 million during the last legislative session. This was the largest infusion of dollars since the closure of Fairview Training Center in Salem.
The prominent individuals who presented her letters of nomination reflect the significant familiarity and resources that Jan cultivated at the state level. These include Senate President Peter Courtney, Senator Frank Morse, Representatives Vicki Berger, Betty Comp, and Jean Cowan. Numerous service providers, and several Department of Human Services’ colleagues joined them in their recommendation.
Jan’s vision, passion and leadership has helped expand services, provide better compensation for direct care workers, and improve the lives of Oregonians with developmental disabilities and their families.
According to Jan, the award represents the recognition and appreciation she shares with the Shangri-La management team. “Without the competence and dedication of Shangri-La’s Directors, Managers and staff, I never would have been able to devote the hours needed to do the work this award has recognized me for. This honor is really shared by all of us,” she said.
ORA is Oregon’s statewide non-profit support organization that represents community service providers who support people with disabilities.
